It was the first phone to the market that uses the Android mobile device platform. The phone is the part of an open standards effort of the Open Handset Alliance. HTC G1 was released in the US on 22 October 2008; in the UK on 30 October 2008; and became available in other European countries including Austria, Netherlands, and the Czech Republic in early 2009.The iPhone proved that simplicity sells, and, in that sense, the G1 succeeds, with one large display, four small buttons, and a trackball on its face. It’s a very clean presentation. But it doesn’t quite grab you. It’s just a little too plain, lacking the glossy finish or unique tapered edges of other devices. Rumored to offer a capacitive touchscreen interface, slide-out qwerty thumbboard, 3G and Wi-Fi, the HTC Dream passed through FCC today. That kind of hardware is 100 percent equal to HTC Touch Diamond 2. T-Mobile customers in the U.S. as well as in Germany are likely to be among the first ones to get a taste of the HTC Dream. We loved using the G1 for email and text messages due to the display and interface. The email application is attractive, and familiar to anyone with a Gmail account. It’s easy to scroll through your inbox, or to compose new mail. And text messages are organized as threaded conversations. Still, so far there are many disappointment from customers. Someone even point out that if you’re looking to be wowed by HTC G1, better prepare for disappointment. With regards to multimedia services, we’re not sure what to expect from the HTC Dream. Google Android will likely offer a pretty capable media player, but T-Mobile can’t be accused of having the best mobile services around. We don’t expect to see messaging offered by the HTC Dream. What’ s worse, amongst all the touch interfaces and multimedia features, the heaviest battle right now is in messaging services. At the first time, T-Mobile promises to have rolled out 3G service in more than 20 markets by the end of 2008, but it could take years for the carrier to be considered a reliable 3G network provider nationwide. The data speed of HTC G1 probably continues to be the big question.
